Getting you behind the wheel safely...

Roadway to Independence

Roadway to Independence Driving provides independence. It enables us to obtain the necessities in life such as groceries, medications and attend medical appointments. It allows us to visit our families and friends and engage in social activities that we enjoy. It is important for our physical and mental well-being.

What if that privilege is denied to you or taken away?

Driving is both a mental and physical activity. There is potential for causing death, bodily injury, and property damage. Drivers must be prepared to make responsible driving decisions that will enhance human safety.

Do any of the following apply to you?

  • Do you have concerns about whether or not driving is still safe for yourself, a parent, or a loved one?
  • Do you have difficulty applying pressure to the brake pedal or can't feel if you are on the gas or brake?
  • Do you put the car in park at a traffic light because it is difficult for you to maintain that pressure on the pedal?
  • Do you have an amputation of your right leg or either of your arms?
  • Do you have a spinal cord injury and have impaired or no use of your lower extremities?
  • Do you have weakness from a stroke on one side of your body or have difficulty communicating?
  • Do you have Spina Bifida, Multiple Sclerosis, Muscular Dystrophy, Spinal Muscle Atrophy, Cerebral Palsy, Parkinsons, Arthritis, or any physical weakness or impairment that limits your mobility?
  • Do you have anxiety about being behind the wheel?
  • Do you have challenges with learning a new activity or require specialized instruction from someone who understands you and your needs?
  • Are you a parent that dreads teaching their teen how to drive?

At Roadway to Independence, we will perform a comprehensive assessment to get a baseline of your physical, visual and cognitive abilities. If you have a license, we head out on the road in your neighborhood, where you are most familiar. If you need adaptive equipment, you will have the opportunity to try it out. We will make recommendations based on your abilities what the next step will be.

Further training will be provided to teach use of adaptive equipment, review defensive driving strategies, provide driving remediation, and reinforce safe driving skills.

We will help you through the process of obtaining a permit, driver license or getting the necessary endorsements to use adaptive equipment.

From assessing seniors or individuals with a recently acquired medical condition (e.g. stroke, traumatic brain injury) for driver safety, to teaching individuals with physical and cognitive limitations or new drivers the skills necessary to become a conscientious defensive driver, Roadway to Independence is able to assist you. If driving retirement is recommended, we will help you to identify alternative means of transportation to allow you to continue to be as independent as possible.
